Downs Park is a large, memorial park with historical significance. It’s situated along the Chesapeake Bay, and boasts a fishing pier, large playground, walking trails, a dog beach, and scenic views.
There is an entrance fee for this park. The fee to enter Down’s Park is $6 per vehicle (subject to change). Annual passes are also available if you plan to frequently visit Anne Arundel County parks. Check out their website for current entrance fees, hours, and any closures.
There are several parking lots in Downs Park, and one of the largest is located by the amphitheater and playground. This parking lot also provides close access to the shoreline, where there are benches lining the water.
In the amphitheater area, there’s also a short boardwalk that leads to an overlook. There is a set of binoculars in this area, so bring a quarter if you’d like to use them. The overlook has a map of the area, to see which areas of the bay you are viewing.
A paved trail surface weaves throughout the park, and some of it is wooded for shade.
Downs Park Playground
Close to the main parking lot by the amphitheater is the playground. This playground was replaced in around 2021, and features two main play structures and a long set of swings.
The tot lot area is covered to provide shade. It features slides and climbing opportunities. The playground surface is mulch, and it is not fenced.
The main play structure is quite large and features two long twist tube slides and a couple of traditional slides. Note that this structure is fairly tall and enclosed at the top. When children are at the top, it is difficult to tell which part of the structure they are in.
Restrooms are located in the general playground / amphitheater area, but not extremely close to the playground. Make sure you have plenty of time to take the walk to the restrooms, if needed.
