Lucy the Elephant – Margate City, NJ

Lucy the Elephant is a U.S. National Historic Landmark along the beach in Margate City, New Jersey. Guided tours of the inside of Lucy, plus an opportunity to go to the top of Lucy, are available for a fee. Though, there is no charge to visit Lucy from the outside and visit the gift shop.

Tickets for the tour can be purchased in the gift shop. At times, there is a Groupon for the tour. Before visiting, be sure to check Lucy’s hours of operation, as they can change at any time.

A small parking lot is available right beside Lucy, however you may only park there to visit Lucy for a limited amount of time. A parking attendant tracks the time spent in the limited parking spaces. The tours depart every 45 minutes during their business hours.

Inside Lucy the Elephant

The ticketed guided tour takes you inside Lucy,. Keep in mind there are narrow, spiral steps to get inside the elephant and to climb to the top of Lucy. The guided tour is relatively short, lasting around 20 to 25 minutes. Once inside Lucy, a short video is played that reviews the history of Lucy. A tour guide provides more information and answers questions about Lucy.

After the video, in good weather, an opportunity is available to climb to the top of Lucy. If anyone in the tour does not want to climb to the top, they do not have to go.

From the top of Lucy, there is a 360 degree view of the surrounding Margate City and the ocean.

The Other Lucy Beach Grille

Behind Lucy, toward the beach, a beach grill serves food including hot dogs, burgers, chicken fingers, wraps, fries, pretzels, beverages, ice cream and more. There is umbrella-shaded picnic-style seating to the side of the grill.
