Mount Trashmore is a unique park in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It’s located along Interstate 264 between Norfolk and Virginia Beach. This world-renowned park is 165 acres and includes two lakes, two playgrounds, a skate park, and walking trails.
The park was originally a landfill. In the 1970s a transformation took place that converted the landfill into a park by compacting layers of solid waste and clean soil.
Mount Trashmore is the main mountain at the park, which also has two lakes, Lake Trashmore and smaller Lake Windsor.
There’s many parking lots available at the park, with one of the main ones being beside the skate park and playground, Kid’s Cove.
Mount Trashmore Playground
Kid’s Cove has 26,000 feet of play space on a rubber surface. The playground features a large climbing and play structure with many types of slides and monkey bars. There are many elevated walkways to navigate between play structures.
Another section of the playground has rock walls and other climbing equipment. Bordering the playground are many small pavilions with picnic tables.
One other fun feature of this park is the stairs that lead to the top of the mountain. The steps are a mural, so it’s a great place to get a photo.
Lake Trashmore Trails
Surrounding the park is the Perimeter Trail (2.2 miles), with two shorter trails also available: Lake Trail (1.5 miles) and Mountain Trail (1.2 miles).
Across the parking lot from the Kid’s Cove playground is the skate park, which includes a competition-size vert ramp. There’s also restrooms and vending machines available. For more information about this park, check out the Virginia Beach website.
